Weekend Cooking
I made this Kenyan dish from a Whole Foods recipe this week with a couple variations bc it seemed a bit boring. I cooked it in veggie stock, and added fresh basil (peak season! so yummy) while it simmered, along with white beans. Nice and lite for summer. Also, I discovered spelt as a rice substitute, love! The texture and cook time is very similar to wheatberries.
Lake Forever
Went to visit my parents in the Berkshires last weekend with some friends, and seriously, how can lakes be so good? Grills, docks, dogs, boats, it's like impossible not to have an amazing time.
Clafoutis
I used this Kitchn post as inspiration to make clafoutis over the weekend, mine was kind of a healthy amalgam of the recipes they have listed and we decided strawberries looked better than plums. I guess this is originally a French dessert, it came out like a light custard, and you can easily make it fairly healthy, I want to try this breakfast version with oatmeal next. Even Mark Bittman posted a version with clementines, which could be fun in the winter.

Jerky!
Per Food and Wine, I made beef jerky from scratch for my dad for Papa's Day this year. It came out great! We couldn't stop eating it, and aside from the long prep and cook time, it's relatively little handling time. I definitely recommend trying this one.

Make it!
I love learning how to make things at home that I'm accustomed to buying from the store. This video from Michael Ruhlman's blog is a great example, 50 lbs of sausage is craazy! But I bet it tasted amazing. I recently purchased the ingredients to make my own grainy mustard, and next on my list are these bread & butter pickles from Smitten Kitchen. Also, I made something from scratch this week that I can't reveal just yet, but it came out grreat, and was never something I considered whipping up at home. You can make everything! And it's often cheaper, greener, healthier, and more delicious. Learning the process is half the fun (for some!), I think a day of making 50 lbs of sausage with friends in my big beautiful kitchen sounds like a day well spent.

Happy Father's Day! (to all, but mostly to my dad)
I love this post that asks you to describe your dad in two words or less. Mine is driven and good-natured - he can pretty much build anything and talk to anyone. And look at those drum skills!!!
Love you Dad.
Love you Dad.

Kumail Nanjiani
Saw this new jokester last night (with Eugene Mirman, Michael Showalter & Jim Gaffigan!) in Prospect Park and I was impressed by his comedic talent. Also, free laughs on a warm summer night with friends is so good.
Happy Friday
Although unlikely, the fact that one kid is wearing headphones supports my hope that they rode up and performed this move spontaneously as a greeting and someone's mom just happened to be standing there with a camera. via Sabino

Scintillating!!
Starts again in 41 days and this promotional picture was just released to give us a taste..of the..4th season. Hm. Soo more eating, drinking, smoking and Don looking up through arched eyebrows while lighting a cigarette..YESSS! Really they could sit at that table all season and I will watch. I have a feeling I am not alone.
sorry, but do not want.
I've recently been looking for some new clothes, a more adult wardrobe, no more jersey tees jeans and converse. I'm a working woman! I want to be taken seriously and look feminine. Which brings me to exhibit A at left. No matter where I look, I cannot find flattering clothes. Look at those shapes! These are everywhere! Loose tank tops? Giant sack tshirts, PLEATS are you joking?? Grandpa cardys. And pls don't even mention flip flop cuff boots because I can't handle it. Where are the pretty, flattering well priced items made with decent material that have been relentlessly floating around my mind for two months now? Please tell me! please. Also? That giant tank top is $140.

Weekend quiet time
Flower heads from Renate Gallois Montbrun. I could cook, download new music and look at photography online all day... unfortunately I have a midterm this week so I'm trying to pump the breaks. Stop distracting me internets!
I'm planning to make this chickpea and asparagus dish from 101cookbooks later, tahini dressing was the deciding factor. And I'm also imagining a fruit salad because produce lately has been blowing my mind. And a little yoga and me time for the spaces in between. Happy Sunday.

LCDDDDDD!
So close I could see Nancy Hwang cry at one point!! I fist pumped my face off, seriously best show ever. I heart them so much, and he was funny and relaxed instead of the aging hipster egomaniac that I anticipated.
Conebone69 at Radio City
I stole this pic offline, these were not my seats, but I wanted to share the inflatable bat that Conan purchased from Meatloaf for this tour. Meatloaf had it onstage for his Bat Out of Hell tour. Amazing. Also, Stephen Colbert & Jon Stewart showed up for a dance off, and Paul Rudd, Bill Hader & Jon Krasinski made surprise appearances to pull the Walker Texas Ranger lever. Oh and Vampire Weekend played. Yo no kid, it was freaking amazing and I laughed for two hours straight. !!!
Last three weekends of cooking
I've been so busy this month! Not a ton of time to cook and even less time to write and link to recipes. Yay summer!! Sorry, back to food. I made yummy burgers from this month's Food and Wine and definitely recommend them. The recipe points out that sausage is already well seasoned, so removing it from the casing and forming patties for burgers was quick and effective. And by effective I mean delicious.
I also made vegetable biryani which is an Indian dish, but I wasn't crazy in love with it. The best part was packing in all the fresh vegetables - pretty and nutritious!
Lastly, over the long weekend I made a brunch of chicken hash and yummy pancakes, but I don't have links to the recipes. The pancake recipe might inspire a pancake-off with my dad, his are tough to beat but I think mine are healthier, which means my mom should be the only judge..!
