I rolled out the winter vegetable standbys for hopefully the last time this week. This roasted veggie salad with walnuts and feta is from this month's Food and Wine, and is actually provided by Sophie Dahl, Roald Dahl's granddaughter. Love Roald Dahl, Sophie Dahl by association, and this salad. Recommend!
Next came this barley, leek and mushroom stew from Andrea at Cooking Books. Her blog is great, because she makes healthy food that tastes good and this stew is no exception. Again, I recommend it.
Last I made this sweet little number for dessert. Again, an Andrea recipe, and again a healthy take on good food. BUT, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this one friends. It's made with tofu, ricotta and quinoa, sweetened with maple syrup, and my main complaint is with the tofu. Don't get me wrong, I eat tofu almost every night, but in sweets it often comes out tasting odd to me, a bit misplaced maybe. Or maybe I just haven't yet found the right combination. Anyway, I still ate a ton of this and didn't have to feel too guilty, so still good times.

Lunch today..
Yes, that is cabbage and peanut butter. In a sandwich. I made mine in a wrap after seeing this picture and post on Michael Ruhlman's food blog, I was so intrigued! Verdict is that it's good - has a nice crunch, and the tastes pair well together! Who knew?! And yes, I am a food freak.

Initial Earrings!
I ordered these post earrings today, and I'm so psyched!! How cute are they? Check out others at ByBoe.
Greenberg
Saw this last weekend. It's good in the sense of watching true to life stories on screen, which I enjoy, but Ben Stiller's character is SUPER neurotic and gets a little tiresome to watch. I can imagine this won't be everyone's favorite movie, but some will like it. Greta Gerwig is great.
Weekend Cooking
I'm trying to spring clean my diet over the next several weeks, and I thought this chickpea and parsley stew was a good start. It's nice and clean, and I expected to be sacrificing a bit by committing to it for dinner this week, but it's so. good. Truly! I definitely recommend, whether you're trying to eat healthy or just looking for something yummy. Photo via DanaTreat.
I also made this fennel and cabbage salad for lunches, and it's good. Not mind-blowing, but good, nice crunch. Photo via TheKitchn.

Two Lovers
I saw this around this time last year. It's really beautifully filmed, somber hues during a cold winter in the far out neighborhood of Brighton Beach. The characters are a little tough to identify with, but it's one of those movies that you have to just sit back and take in - the scenery, the people, and the story. Overall, it's a very pretty film.
Thorn in the Heart
Went to see this with Floating Heads on Monday bc Dina wasn't interested, and I enjoyed it. It's a documentary Michel Gondry did of his aunt's life working as a school teacher in the French countryside. Definitely a personal piece, but I think it's interesting to see families and explore how people choose to live their lives. After the screening, Gondry sat on stage and talked about his work for over an hour, best part!! Really interesting to hear about how he arrived at different artistic choices. Can't wait to see The Green Hornet!
French Connection
I'm loving the latest French Connection campaign, it feels so classic and European. There's a billboard in the west village that's reminiscent of the ladies and gentlemen of the forties, who dressed well no matter the occasion, and were full on adults by the age of twenty five. Respectable. Not to mention I love a man in a beard.

Weekend Cooking
Today I made two Dana Treat recipes, and these chickpeas were the highlight. Basically a warm salad, with cilantro, fennel and cumin seeds, crushed red pepper, and yogurt dressing. Lots of flava.
I also made this cauliflower and zucchini dish that I wish I was more psyched about. The long ingredient list sounded so promising, but somehow mine isn't tasting like much, and I'm not sure why. I added red beans for a little more protein, and it's good, just not the fist pumping dinner I anticipated..

My parent's wedding song
I know I'm dating how young my parents are here, but I heard this in a cab on the way home tonight and it was so sweet and sentimental. What a great song.

Classic Esquire Covers
George Lois talks about his most controversial covers in NY Mag, and I thought this one was so interesting. This is the Native American who originally posed for the nickel in 1913. In this 1964 issue, Esquire was running two Native American related articles and Lois decided to see if he could track down Chief John Big Tree. He found him on a reservation in Syracuse, 87 years old, "six foot two, in good health, and beautiful." So neat.

Some NYC Recommendations
Bar Bao on 81st and Columbus. I finally got to eat a meal here last week with my family, and we all agreed that it's great. Vietnamese with a French influence, they're open for late night dining, and it's rustic and romantic. Dates on the UWS!
My family also has a tradition of going to a jazz show at the Lincoln Center club in Columbus Circle. It's such a great spot, we've never been disappointed. There's a $35 entrance fee with a one drink minimum, and they play three sets that you can choose from. This year we sat one table away from Tony Bennett!

I heart Chris Cooper.
It's Oscars week, which I think is kinda sorta just a lot of show. I like learning about foreign and documentary films that I might not have previously considered, but overall I tend to disagree with the nominations and wins. In this spirit, I wanted to do a little post about Chris Cooper, just because. He's not up for anything this year, but he's a great actor, and not someone that people regularly reference, or that I ever really think about, but then I'll see him in something and I'm reminded of how much I like him. He makes good decisions, and is pretty prolific. It would be great if awards season celebrated more Chris Coopers, and fewer dress designers.
